Basic Intro to the island of Corfu

The beautiful island of Corfu is a member of the Ionian Group of Greek islands. Just saying the name conjures up visions of lush greenery, golden sands and summer sunshine; and the reality doesn't disappoint. Corfu's capital, Kerkyra, reflects its chequered history with evidence of both Venetian and British influence. An ideal venue the town offers opportunities for museum visits, walking, sailing, exploring the town or eating and drinking as you watch the world go by; you can hardly ask for more!

Away from the beach the inland scenery is glorious with many places of interest to visit. Here you can find Krini, Lakones and Makrades. Another worthwhile visit is to the Kaiser's Lookout above the village of Pelekas. Still away from the coast you can find the Byzantine fortress of Angelokrastro, the Monastery of Theotokou, and, just outside Agios Gordios, at Sinarades, the Folk Museum of Central Corfu.

If it's beaches that you're looking for, then the west of the island offers the best - visit Paleokastritsa and, travelling further south, find Ermones, Glyfada, Agios Gordios and Myrtiotissa.

The island is famous for being the childhood home of two Durrell brothers, Gerald who's passion was wild-life and conservation and Lawrence who would win enduring fame as a writer. In 1921 baby Philip was born into the Greek royal family at the Villa, Mon Repos, on the Kanoni peninsula. This royal prince would become known as Philip Mountbatten and, after his marriage to Princess Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Not far from the royal villa was the summer home of Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the Ahillion Palace. Also along this south - eastern coastline visitors can find the towns of Benitses, Messonghi and Boukharis.
